The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued multiple high-priority heatwave alerts as temperatures begin crossing 44°C in several regions of the country. According to current forecasts, the heatwave is affecting the plains of Northwest, Central, and East India, with intense conditions expected to continue for the next 4 to 5 days.

Impacted States and Regions

The IMD has placed different regions under severe heatwave or hot and humid conditions.

Northwest India

Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are under a Yellow Alert. West Uttar Pradesh and East Rajasthan are also expected to face continued heat until April 24 to 25.

Central India

Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra are recording temperatures between 43°C and 45°C.

East India

Jharkhand, Bihar, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal are currently witnessing isolated heatwave pockets. In Jharkhand, specific alerts were issued for April 21, while scattered showers may bring some relief by April 24.

Coastal Regions

Hot and humid warnings are active for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat.

Safety Guidelines from Authorities

With the early rise in temperatures, authorities have advised people to take precautions.

  • Drink water regularly, even if not feeling thirsty
  • Use ORS, coconut water, or buttermilk for hydration
  • Avoid outdoor activity between 12 PM and 4 PM
  • Wear light-coloured and loose cotton clothing
  • Use hats, umbrellas, or shade while outside
  • Take extra care of elderly people, children, and those with health conditions
Important: The IMD has clarified that social media claims of a continuous 45-day heatwave are exaggerated. However, the department has noted that the number of heatwave days this summer may be higher than normal, with some areas expected to experience 2 to 8 heatwave days in a month.

Conclusion

With temperatures rising early in the season, residents across affected states are advised to stay alert, follow safety measures, and monitor official weather updates in the coming days.
